PANNING TECHNIQUES

TEN SIMPLE STEPS!

1.  Install the screen in your pan. Scoop the sand and rock that is to be processed onto the screen and remove large rocks by hand.

2.  Holding the pan by the handle grips, submerge the pan in the water. Remove the pan from the water and vigorously shuffle it from side to side to shake the gold down through the material and into the pan. Repeat this process as often as necessary until all material which is 1/4 inch and smaller has gone through the screen. Remove the screen and carefully check its surface for large nuggets!

3.  Submerge the pan gently, using the handle grips. Remove the pan from the water and shuffe it from side to side until the water drains from the pan. DO NOT USE A CIRCULAR MOTION! Now it's time to slough (to separate the gold from the gravel).

4.  Resubmerge the pan again using the handle grips. Gently remove the pan from the water while tipping the pan slightly forward. This will remove the top layer of sand and dirt. Repeat several times as needed. Shuffle again. Repeat until only the fine material remains in the pan. Remove any larger materials or items such as lead, nails, bullets, etc.

5.  Now we're really having fun! Hold the pan in one hand and gently submerge just the tip of the pan in the water. Gently bump the pan against your free hand, using a wrist motion to settle the gold to the bottom of the pan. Repeat this process if necessary.

6.  (OPTIONAL) Put a magnet inside a plastic bottle, plastic bag, or aluminum can. Gently submerge the tip of the pan in the water until the pan is one-third full. Using one hand, shuffle the material in the pan. With the other hand, hold the magnet just under the surface of the water. The magnetic material will travel upward. Do not touch the magnet to the material because this will compress the magnetic material around the gold and you will lose part of your gold. You may need to repeat this process several times. The remaining sands will be non-magnetic.

7.  Resubmerge the tip of the pan in the water and bump the pan against your free hand, sloughing the top material. Repeat this process until you see gold or until only a spoonful of material is left in the pan.

8.  Rotate the pan 180 degrees and very gently continue sloughing and bumping until only the desired materials remain. Keep a small amount of water in the pan.

9.  Now it's time to go sniffing. Hold your vacuum bottle upright and squeeze. Turn the bottle upside down and sniff the gold into the bottle. If you do not have a sniffer, carefully drain the water from the pan. Touch a clean, dry fingertip to your tongue and then touch the gold. Carefully place the gold in a small bottle filled with water. Dry your fingertip and repeat the process. This will pick up gold particles you cannot get with tweezers.

10. Do not throw the gold in the air and yell, "Bonanza!" You'll just have to start all over again!
